The Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen2 has officially entered into service, marking a major milestone for the Citation Gen2 family and introducing the most comprehensive upgrades to date. Designed and manufactured by Textron Aviation, a subsidiary of Textron Inc., the aircraft sets a new benchmark in the entry-level jet segment.
Launch customers Dave Mecartney and Shannon Day recently took delivery of the first CJ3 Gen2 aircraft, highlighting strong customer confidence in the platform. Mecartney, a long-time Citation pilot and member of Textron Aviation’s Customer Advisory Board, played a key role in shaping the aircraft’s enhancements through direct user feedback.
The CJ3 Gen2 introduces several notable advancements aimed at improving both pilot experience and passenger comfort. One of the standout features is the integration of Garmin autothrottle technology, which significantly reduces pilot workload while enhancing flight-envelope protection. The aircraft is equipped with the latest Garmin G3000 avionics suite, offering an intuitive touchscreen interface, enhanced connectivity, and real-time data capabilities.
In addition, the cockpit has been redesigned to include an extra 4.5 inches of legroom, improving accessibility and comfort for pilots, particularly during long missions. Advanced connectivity features such as the GDL60 system enable seamless transmission of flight plans, automatic database updates, and wireless diagnostics, further streamlining operations.
The cabin experience has also been elevated, with a fully customizable interior that can accommodate up to 10 occupants. Operators can tailor the layout and features to suit specific mission requirements, while enhancements such as an externally serviceable lavatory add convenience and operational flexibility.
The aircraft received certification from the Federal Aviation Administration in October 2025, with its design heavily influenced by insights from pilots, owners, and maintenance professionals. This collaborative development approach ensured that every enhancement—from cockpit ergonomics to cabin functionality—addresses real-world operational needs.
Textron Aviation’s leadership emphasized that the CJ3 Gen2 combines exceptional range, payload capacity, and fuel efficiency with modern productivity features, making it a highly competitive offering in the light jet category. Customers have also highlighted the aircraft’s strong reliability, handling characteristics, and robust global support network as key decision factors.
For long-time Citation operators, the CJ3 Gen2 represents a natural evolution of a trusted platform, offering advanced technology while maintaining the reliability and service excellence the brand is known for. As demand for efficient and technologically advanced business jets continues to grow, the CJ3 Gen2 is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of modern aviation customers.
